DOGS CHASING CARS

Why do dogs chase cars? Because they see vehicles as prey running away. And different breeds have a herd instinct-- some are territorial, while others are just plain bored.
Human hardwiring is oddly similar. We decided to finish David’s book Heartbeats in Clay over the summer, but that deadline extended into the fall. Details kept arising that showed us we’re still chasing that car. Add to that, our designer needed decisions on layout, font, book size, etc.
Many of us have work deadlines, home projects, and family responsibilities. Without prioritizing, these cars are just out of reach, keeping us running breathlessly and without the satisfaction of completion and moving on. This can cause us to be forever on a treadmill.
Whether it’s pitching for new business, putting yourself out there for a keynote at conferences, or communicating more effectively with your team, just do it, even if you believe you’re not ready. Usually, there is time to revise, rehearse or ask for an extension if necessary. Running is too exhausting. We finally delivered our book manuscript to the designer, so champagne is in our future. Prioritize what’s most important to you and go for it. Then be satisfied when you complete each task and give yourself time to recharge before your next big project.
