TIP OF THE WEEK: TBU

A prevalent and damaging tendency of speakers is to include facts, data, or background that is true, but useless (TBU). We frequently witness presenters hell-bent on educating their audience– even though the venue demands persuasion, like pitching a deal or inspiring their team. This is a tough habit to break. Shakespeare put it eloquently:  ”….his words are a very fantastical banquet; just so many strange dishes…”

First, determine your intention or what you want your audience to do. Then include only the material that supports this intention. Keep your comments brief and targeted. Forget the educational format your company, industry or organization has always used. Those are yesterday’s tools. When you pare down your words to what drives your intention, and package them to move your audience, you will be successful.
